War is a frightening concept. Although two-thirds of the U.S. soldiers in the Vietnam War volunteered to go, another one-third were drafted or ordered to go against their will. The war was presented to U.S. citizens as one that would surely be won and quickly as well. Instead, young men all over the country were coming home in body bags after having been drafted. In May 1968, there were 562 U.S. troops that were killed in one single week alone! Many believe the draft was an unfair policy, as most of those drafted were from the poor and working class segments of society. There were three legal ways of getting out of the draft: physical problems, going to college, and needing to support your family. Many people say to this day that Former President, Bill Clinton, got out of the draft improperly. A popular way that men avoided the draft was by fleeing to Canada. These people were called Draft Dodgers. If you dodged the draft, there were consequences. Although later overturned, boxing champion Muhammad Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title and ordered to prison and fined for avoiding the draft.
