Ho Chi Minh, the man to defeat:
|
The Vietnam War started as an offshoot of the Cold War because the U.S. wanted to ensure that communism would not spread throughout the world. The Vietnam War was actually the second phase of fighting in Vietnam. During the first phase, which began in 1946, the Vietnamese fought France for control of Vietnam. At that time, Vietnam was part of the French colonial empire in Indochina. The United States sent French military equipment, but the Vietnamese defeated the French in 1954. Vietnam was then split into North and South Vietnam, which caused the second phase of the war, beginning in 1955. North Vietnam was controlled by communists when Ho Chi Minh rose to power, whereas South Vietnam was anti-communist. The U.S. sent military to support the South Vietnamese, with the end goal being to end communism once and for all.
